The Yellow-Legged Hornet Has Arrived in the US. Here's the Trap With Proven Results in Europe since 2021.

First detected in Savannah in 2023, Vespa velutina has already destroyed apiaries across the Southeast. European beekeepers spent two decades learning to fight it. The Ornetin Classic is what came out of that experience — and it is availiable in the US.

The Ornetin Classic is a selective trap designed to protect gardens and apiaries from the yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina). Its carefully designed entry system targets the species specifically while minimizing impact on bees and other beneficial insects.

Effective throughout the season:

  • In spring, it captures founding queens before colonies have a chance to develop
  • In summer and autumn, it reduces worker hornet pressure on beehives and outdoor spaces

Easy to set up and used by beekeepers and home gardeners across Europe for over 5 years. Fits standard wide-mouth mason jars and built for continuous, season-after-season use.

Yes. Ornetin products are designed for selectivity and bee safety. The muzzle protects bees without blocking their flight, and the trap aims to minimize the capture of beneficial insects.

For best results with the Ornetin trap, use a balanced bait that attracts hornets while limiting impact on bees.

A proven and widely used recipe includes:

  • Dark beer
  • White wine (repels honeybees)
  • Fruit syrup or sugar

This mixture is highly attractive to Vespa velutina and works well throughout the trapping season. Refresh the bait every 7 to 10 days to maintain optimal performance. To discover detailed bait recipes, seasonal variations, and expert tips, visit our blog.

The Ornetin system includes color-coded, species- and season-specific nozzles to optimize capture:

  • 🔵 Blue nozzle – Designed for founding queens (spring)
  • 🟣 Purple nozzle – Designed for worker hornets (summer/autumn)

Additional optional nozzles are available for advanced selectivity:

  • 🟡🟠 Yellow/Orange – for Vespa orientalis (mostly in the Spanish regions)
  • ⚫ Black – reduces capture of the European hornet (Vespa crabro)

Using the correct nozzle at the right time significantly improves efficiency and selectivity.

Glass jars are sold separately—we encourage you to reuse jars you already have, or add them to your cart if needed.

The Ornetin UV trap is compatible with standard wide-mouth mason jars ("Ball" jars).

Proper placement is key to maximizing trap effectiveness.

Spring (queen trapping):

  • Trap with liquid bait in a vertical position
  • Place traps in calm, sheltered areas
  • Focus on flowering zones, gardens, and early forage areas
  • Start early in the season to stop colony formation

Summer & Autumn (worker trapping):

  • Place traps near apiaries and beehives
  • Trap with a “solid bait” in a horizontal position

General setup best practices:

  • Hang traps at 1 to 1.5 meters in height
  • Place traps in a shaded area (avoid direct sunlight)
  • Keep traps protected from rain (under a tree, roof edge, or shelter)
  • Avoid placing directly at hive entrances
  • Check and refresh bait every 7–10 days

Effective trapping depends on two key factors: keeping the bait fresh and maintaining captured hornets alive. Together, these significantly improve trapping efficiency.

Direct exposure to the sun or harsh weather can evaporate the bait and overheat the trap, reducing its effectiveness.

For best results, we recommend placing the trap in a sheltered area, protected from direct sunlight and rain.
