Introduction

Assembling the Ornetin Hornet Guard is simple and quick. However, to ensure proper assembly and optimal performance, it is essential to follow the instructions carefully.

We recommend that you watch the full assembly video before starting. Once watched, follow the step-by-step guide below.

Assembly Steps

Required Tools

You will only need a Phillips screwdriver.

Package Contents

  • 1 base plate
  • 2 side panels
  • 1 top bridge
  • 1 plexiglass front panel
  • 8 screws 3×20 mm for the plexiglass
  • 7 screws 4×30 mm for the wood
  • 2 strings and 2 plugs for the drone holes

1. Assembling the wooden structure

  1. Lay the base flat and attach the two side panels on each side using 4 screws 4×30. Carefully align the back edges of the side panels with the back of the base.
  2. Next, attach the top bridge using 2 screws 4×30. Make sure the back edges of the bridge and the side panels are flush to allow a regular spacing of about 5 mm with the front of the hive.
  3. It is normal for the bridge to slightly overhang in the front. This recess forms a groove where the plexiglass panel will be inserted.

2. Installing the plexiglass front panel

  1. Turn the Hornet Guard over so that the top bridge rests against the table.
  2. Slide the plexiglass panel into the groove formed between the top bridge and the side panels.
  3. Place the Hornet Guard upright again, with the plexiglass in a horizontal position. If needed, support it to prevent it from tipping over.
  4. Screw in 2 screws 3×20 on each side of the panel. Be sure to insert them perpendicularly to avoid cracking the plexiglass.
  5. Then place the Hornet Guard flat on the work surface and screw in 2 screws underneath, also perpendicular to the panel.
  6. Finally, attach the 2 rear screws on the top bridge. Do not overtighten.

3. Installing the plugs for drone holes

  1. Insert a string into each plug through the conical part.
  2. Tie a knot at the protruding end, then pull the string back so the knot sits inside the cavity of the plug.
  3. Place the plug in the hole of the corresponding side panel and fasten the other end of the string using one of the already installed screws.

4. Installation at the apiary

  1. Position the Hornet Guard in front of the hive entrance and screw in the last 4×30 screw into the center of the top bridge.
  2. Ensure that all openings are clean and spaced about 5 mm apart.
  3. If installing the Hornet Guard during the day, the bees will discover a new “veranda” at their entrance and will need a few hours to adjust. To avoid unnecessary stress, it's best to install it in the morning or evening, when activity is calmer.
